  • FTP Plugin for WP Database Backup Plugin

    This plugin adds a fourth way to save the database backup files of the WP Database Backup plugin. With the standard WP Database Backup plugin you can save the database tables of your weblog a file. This backup file can stored on the server of your weblog, send to an email account or saved (manually) to your local harddisk.
    With the FTP Plugin for the WP Database Backup Plugin you can perform manual or scheduled database backups and send the backup files via FTP to another server with more or maybe cheaper disk space (e.g. you can send it to you via a DynDNS pointed USB device at your local router/server) without starting an external FTP program.
    This plugin uses main functions of the WP DB Backup plugin originally of Scott Merril and now with development and support by Austin Matzko to create the backup files. In cause of that, it is necessary that the WP DB Backup plugin is already installed on your weblog.

    All settings of this plugin will be saved in separate database variables. Further it is possible to delete these options from the database without problems.

      The files should be stored like this:

    • activate the plugin

    update to a new version:

    • deactivate the old plugin
    • delete the options of the old version in the options table of your weblog database. (Site Admin > Plugins > in the description of FTP Plugin for WP Database Backup Plugin is a link to the delpage) (If you do not delete the options in the database then the old preference will be used in the new version. Otherwise the new installed version will use a default preference.)
    • install the new version
    • activate the plugin

    deinstallation:

    • deactivate the plugin
    • Delete the options of the old version in the options table of your weblog database. (Site Admin > Plugins > in the description of FTP Plugin for WP Database Backup Plugin is a link to the delpage)
    • delete the folders and files of the plugin

    new features and changes

    in version 0.8.5 :

    • small changes internal changes (e.g. the plugin has no more hardcoded folder names)

    in version 0.8.4 :

    • This version is like v0.8.3 but without the update notification function. I removed these files and function because it has not worked so well and I'm thinking about using the hosting service of wordpress.org.

    in version 0.8.3 :

    • This version shows much more informative status messages and informs you better.
    • The plugin supports SSL-FTP connections. It uses the PHP function ftp_ssl_connect. (This function is probably not on every server available.)
    • Further, it is possible to define a timeout limit for the FTP connection attempts via the form on the plugin page.

    in version 0.8.2 :

    • Now, the plugin shows a more clear error message if the target folder on the remote FTP server does not exists.
    • A minor bug in "mechanism" that shows the log entries of the sheduled backup activities

    • plugin update notification: it is now possible to set update check intervalls by oneself. You can also deactivate the update check easily by following the link in the plugin description at the plugins page of your weblog. This update notification is compared to v0.8 an independent cron job and connected to the comon plugins update check interval of WordPress. (The update check log file in the folder of this plugin will never grow bigger than 10 Kbytes.)
    • the scheduled backup with this plugin is now repaired and works again

    in version 0.8 :

    • automatic notification of new plugin versions: this plugin is the first of my plugins with such a notification function. This functionality is not the same compared with the plugins which are provided via http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/. This plugin pulls the latest version numbers out of a separate RSS-feed (http://undeuxoutrois.de/undeuxoutrois_plugin_versions.xml) which i'm using to announce new versions and compares with version of the installed plugin. The plugin tries to get the information during opening of the plugins page of your WP blog. (But not every time you open the plugins page, because the plugin uses the fetch_rss function of WP to process the RSS-feed.) If there is a new version then a light yellow row appears on the plugins page beneath the plugin description. The notification contains a link to version details.
      If you don't want this automatic update or new version check then delete (or rename) the file wp-db-backup-ftp-plugin_plugin_update_check.php.
      (This feature works only with WP 2.5 and newer versions of WP.)
    • It should be possible to use this plugin in a self defined plugins folder.
    • fixed some bugs from version 0.7

    in version 0.7 :

    • new manual backup visualization: i have replaced the old progress bar after some problems with log frame which documents all actions of the new AJAXified backup function.

    in version 0.6.1 :

    • the control mechanism which controls wether the WP DB Backup plugin is active is improved now and should respect that the main file of the WP DB Backup plugin is probably not situated in one of these folders /plugins/ or /plugins/wp-db-backup

    Dieses Plugin bietet eine vierte Möglichkeit die Datenbankbackupdateien Ihres WordPress Weblogs zu sichern. Mit dem standard WP Database Backup Plugin können Sie die Backupdateien auf dem Server oder Ihrer lokalen Festplatte speichern. Oder Sie können die Backupdateien an eine E-Mail-Adresse versenden.
    Mit dem FTP Plugin für das WP Database Backup Plugin, können Sie Datenbank-Backups manuell oder zeitgesteuert durchführen und die Backupdateien via FTP zu einem entfernten Server mit mehr bzw. günstigeren Speicherplatz senden bzw. senden lassen (z.B. zu einem per DynDNS erreichbaren USB-Speicherstick an Ihrem lokalen DSL/WLAN-Router) ganz ohne ein externes FTP Programm.
    Dieses Plugin benutzt wichtige Functionen des WP DB Backup Plugins welches ursprünglich von Scott Merril entwickelt wurde und nun von Austin Matzko weiterentwickelt wurde und gepflegt wird, um die Backupdateien zu stellen. So ist es eine Vorraussetzung, dass das WP DB Backup Plugin installiert ist.

    Alle Einstellungen des FTP Plugins werden separat von denen des WP DB Backup Plugins gespeichert.

    Installation:

    • Kopieren Sie das Verzeichnis und Dateien in das Pluginverzeichnis Ihres Weblogs.

    • Aktivieren Sie das Plugin.

    Umstieg auf eine neuere Version:

    • Deaktivieren Sie das Plugin.
    • Löschen Sie alle Einstellungen des Plugins aus der der Datenbank (Site Admin > Plugins > inder Beschreibung des FTP Plugin für das WP Database Backup Plugin finden Sie einen Link zu einem "Lösch-Seite"). (Wenn Sie die Einstellungen nicht löschen, werden die Einstellungen von der neuen Version übernommen, falls die Variablennamen nicht verändert wurden, was aber nicht so oft auftreten wird.)
    • Installieren Sie die Dateien der neuen Version, so dass die alten Dateien überschrieben werden.
    • Aktivieren Sie das Plugin.

    Deinstallation:

    • Deaktivieren Sie das Plugin.
    • Löschen Sie alle Einstellungen des Plugins aus der der Datenbank (Site Admin > Plugins > inder Beschreibung des FTP Plugin für das WP Database Backup Plugin finden Sie einen Link zu einem "Lösch-Seite").
    • Löschen Sie die Dateien und das Verzeichnis des Plugins.

    neue Funktionen und Änderungen

    in Version 0.8.5 :

    • Diese Version enthält kleinere Veränderungen z.B. gibt es im Source Code keine festdefinierten Verzeichnisnamen mehr

    in Version 0.8.4 :

    • Die größte Änderung in dieser Version ist, dass die Aktualisierungsinformationsfunktionalität nicht mehr enthalten ist, da sie trotz des Umfangs an Codezeilen nicht zufriedenstellend funktionierte.

    in Version 0.8.3 :

    • Das Plugin zeigt nun noch mehr und vor allem auch aussagekräftigere Statusmeldung, die es im Fehlerfall vereinfachen die Ursache zu suchen
    • Das Plugin unterstützt nun SSL-FTP Verbindungen. Es verwendet die PHP Funktion ftp_ssl_connect. (Diese Funktion steht aber evtl. nicht auf allen Servern zu Verfügung.)
    • Weiterhin ist es nun möglich ein Timeout Limit für die FTP Verbindungsversuche über die Pluginseite festzulegen.

    in Version 0.8.2 :

    • Das Plugin zeigt nun eine etwas eindeutigere Fehlermeldung falls das angegebene FTP-Zielverzeichnis nicht existiert
    • Kleinere Fehler beim Anzeigen der Cron-Log-Datei beseitigt.

    in Version 0.8.1 :

    • Es ist jetzt möglich die Intervalle, mit denen dieses Plugin nach neuen Versionen sucht, können nun selbst gewählt werden. Man kann damit auch den Update Check abstellen. Diese Einstellmöglichkeit ist über die Pluginbeschreibung auf der Pluginsseite Ihres Weblogs zu erreichen.
    • Die zeitgesteuerte FTP-Backupfunktion dieses Plugins ist repariert und funktioniert jetzt wieder.

    in Version 0.8 :

    • Dieses Plugin hat als ersten meiner Plugins nun eine automatische Funktion, die beim Aufruf der Plugins-Seite im Admin-Bereich in einem sepparaten RSS-Feed (http://undeuxoutrois.de/undeuxoutrois_plugin_versions.xml) die aktuelle Versionsnummer des Plugins abruft und mit der Version des installierten Plugins vergleicht. Wenn es eine neue Version des Plugins gibt, wird unter der Pluginbeschreibung eine Meldung angezeigt (Allerdings wird keine Meldung im Menü im Admin-Bereich angezeigt, wie es bei den Plugins, die auf http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ angeboten werden, üblich ist.).
      Falls Sie dieses Features nicht wünschen, können Sie einfach die Datei wp-db-backup-ftp-plugin_plugin_update_check.php löschen oder umbenennen.
      (Diese Funktion steht erst ab WP 2.5.x zur Verfügung.)
    • Das Plugin sollte nun auch aus selbstdefinierten Pluginverzeichnissen heraus funktionieren.
    • Außerdem wurden einige Fehler aus Version 0.7 behoben.

    in Version 0.7 :

    • Dieses Plugin hat eine neue Darstellung des manuellen Backupvorgangs. Nach ein paar Problemen mit dem alten Fortschrittsbalken, habe ich diesen ersetzt. Der Backupvorgang wird nun per AJAX ausgelöst.

    in Version 0.6.1 :

    • Der Mechanismus, der überprüft, ob das WP DB Backup Plugin aktiviert ist, wurde verbessert. (Es wird nun auch berücksichtigt, dass die Hauptdatei des WP DB Backup Plugins nicht unbedingt in den Verzeichnissen /plugins/ oder /plugins/wp-db-backup/ liegen muss.)

    in Version 0.6 :

I get this Error
"WP Database Backup Plugin is NOT activated. This Plugin works only with the active WP Database Backup Plugin."

The described error message occurs if the FTP Plugin for WP Database Backup Plugin can't find the string-expressions 'wp-db-backup.php' or 'wp-db-backup/wp-db-backup.php' in the list of the active plugins.

So, please check if the wp-db-backup.php file is located directly in the plugins folder or in the subfolder /wp-db-backup/ of the plugins folder of your weblog.

I will fix this restricted check in the next version.

is there a way to do an automated full back by ftp with this plugin? (I mean database and uploaded files for example).

If not it would be a great features :-p

This plugin has no such recovery function (it is "only" a addon for the WP DB Backup plugin).
I think in general it is possible to implement such a recovery function. But to do this it needs a big effort and i will not implement such a functionality in the near future.
But i believe there are plugins out there, which have a database recovery function, so that you do not have to use the phpMyAdmin or similar.

I've installed your plugin to over 120 WordPress sites I administer for my job, and am finding that for whatever reason, it is not functioning properly. I use it on my personal server/site with out any problems, so I'm a bit lost.

Following is the messages from the Manual Backup Log:
